An Enneagram, also known as Enneagram of Personality, is a model of the human psyche that’s divided into nine personality types. While it’s very difficult to place a person in only one personality type, the Enneagram is designed to represent different philosophies while capturing the overall essence of a person. The nine Enneagram types are as followed:

The Perfectionist: Also referred to as The Reformer, this person is considered to be rational with an idealistic type that’s principled. Exudes self-control.

The Helper: Can also be referred to as The Giver. The Helper is caring and categorized as an interpersonal type. This person tends to be generous and people-pleasing.

The Achiever: Also known as The Performer, The Achiever is a person who is very success-oriented. The Achievers are very pragmatic people who are driven and adaptive, but care very much about their social status.

The Individualist: In some Enneagram types, The Individualist is also labeled as The Romantic. The Individualist often displays behaviors that are dramatic and expressive. The Individualist is also very sensitive, withdrawn, temperamental and self-absorbed.

The Investigator: The Investigator, also known as The Observer, is often a very intense person with a cerebral personality type. This person is perceptive, innovative, and oftentimes secretive.

The Loyalist: Across other Enneagram platforms, The Loyalist is also known as the Loyal Skeptic. This person tends to be very security-oriented and suspicious. The Loyalist is also a very committed, engaging, responsible, and anxious.

The Enthusiast: The Enthusiast is usually a very energetic person that has a fun-loving personality. This person tends to keep themselves busy and carries a nature that’s very spontaneous and versatile. However, The Enthusiast is very easily distracted and scatter-brained.   

The Challenger: Also called The Protector, The Challenger exudes a dominating personality type while being powerful, decisive and confrontational. The Challenger is also a very self-confident person. 

The Peacemaker: The Peacemaker, The Mediator, is typically a very easy-going person. With a very modest, self-effacing personality, The Peacemaker is very receptive, reassuring, and agreeable.

These Enneagrams break down even further and are each categorized into the three centers of intelligence and perception: head, heart, and body. The body-based types are The Perfectionist, The Challenger, and The Peacemaker. As a body-based type, their primary instinct is to lead with the body–going with their ‘gut-feeling’–and depend on personal security and personal control. The heart-based types–feelings-based types–are more emotional people. They show concern and empathy for others while focusing on success, relationships, and performance expectations. Feeling-based types are The Helper, The Achiever, and The Individualist. The last center of intelligence, the head, is a thinking-based type that leads with ideas, information, and decision-making. Thinking-based personalities want to create certainty, a sense of safety, and always search for multiple options before making a decision or setting out on a venture. The thinking-based types are The Enthusiast, The Loyalist, and The Investigator.

While the Enneagram model can be quite useful in therapy, development, and coaching environments to help instill personal growth, it can also be implemented in the workplace. In the workplace, the Enneagram can be used to classify employees and grasp a better understanding of their unique personalities.
